BOYS FROM THE SOUTH

The mask is a being from the world beyond, personified in a material that comes from life on earth, a metaphoric bridge between culture and nature. (Masks, Quai Branly Museum, Paris)

The collection is based on the DODO masquerade which takes place during Ramadan, in which the performers are primarily Muslim children or young teenagers. Children make their own costumes, using common materials such as cardboard, plastic bags, burlap sacks or gourds. Most costumes take the shapes of wild animals. The masqueraders perform at night, travelling from one family to another. This masquerade takes place in Burkina Faso, as I would like to have the freedom to create my own masquerade as a tribe, combined with Masks, local materials, pigments, hand woven textiles with details who refer to ‘THE BOYS OF THE SOUTH’.
