Zellige, which means small polished stone, is a colored earthenware tile handmade in Morocco since the 10th century. The clay is kneaded with water, shaped by hand, dried and fired in a kiln. Vitreous glazes are then applied and melted on the ceramic bisque (first firing of the clay in the oven before glazing), in multiple shades. Zellige allows to make mosaics by assembling small pieces of ceramics bound by cement.
